About Sumi

SUMI (formerly Ma Tante Sumi) has been dazzling local patrons, celebrities (don't make us name drop) and visitors to the Castro for 20 years. A beautiful mix of Asian and French cuisine will put this 'Fresh and Sexy' legend on your map. If you have dined with Sumi in the past and haven't been in for awhile, you are in for a treat. 'Mama's had some work done', and it shows. Not only is the face lift a wonder with soft gold and grey tones but the menu reflects the change as well. Standards that we could not part with have remained (Miso Roasted Chicken, tempura-style calamari) as well as some flirtacious new addtions such as tuna tartare bursting with fresh ahi and avocado, and the perfect finish of the sumi-san dae made with Scharffenberger chocolate.
Groovy beats, friendly service, memorable cuisine and the sexiest location in town urge you succumb to your appetite.

Ma Tante Sumi
continues to kick out fine fusion food
By Lisa Park (01/21/2004)

" Enter Chef Brenda Buenviaje (pronounced "bwen-vee-ah-hay"; and meaning "good journey" in Spanish). Formerly the executive chef at high-profile Oritalia, Buenviaje returned to the Bay Area last year, looking for a change of pace. (Motherhood will do that to you.) She found it at Ma Tante Sumi — a cozy neighborhood establishment seating no more than 44 diners at a time in its pinewood and floral-print interior, tucked up off the beaten path in the Castro. "
