San Francisco Restaurant Guide - Western Addition Restaurants
|
|
|
A historically African American neighborhood and once home to the San Francisco chapter of the Black Panther Party, the Western Addition today still continues to be a source for African American culture and stellar soul food in San Francisco. For soul food standouts, try Blue Jay Café for fried chicken and macaroni and cheese, along with colorful portraits of soul music greats; for BBQ, the inimitable Brother-in-Law's BBQ leaves diners with sticky fingers and a satisfied stomach after a heaping plate of ribs. In addition to soul food, the Western Addition is seeing a trend towards hip restaurants and lounges along the revitalized Divisadero Street. For organic wood-fired cuisine, try the new Nopa and for a hip wine bar, Madrone Lounge is just a few blocks away to either start or end a long night of eating and drinking in the Western Addition.
Brother-in-Law's Barbecue
705 Divisadero. Tel. 415.931.7427 $$. You can smell the smoke blocks away—the best BBQ in town. |
Jay's Cheesesteak
553 Divisadero, Tel. 415.771.5104 $. As the name implies, Jay's serves cheesesteaks, both traditional and vegetarian (seitan) varieties—lovingly prepared, filling and juicy. Sirron Norris's artwork adds bouyancy and color to an otherwise simple decor. |
Rasselas
2801 California. Tel. 415.567.5010 Ethiopian, with jazz nightly. The food couldn't be better, although the combination of loud jazz and canvas-draped ceilings can be a little disorienting on a full stomach. |
