Sixth Street Bars and Clubs

For most, 6th Street is speedway for motorists en route to the freeway. But for those willing to brave 6th Street at night (it's not dangerous, just unsightly), the reward is unbridled hipness. Dense with cool bars, art galleries and street art (not to mention the best Vietnamese restaurant in San Francisco) San Francisco's 6th Street is a maverick counterculture haven. Small, swanky bars and dimly lit dives can be found on 6th. Although these might not be the most beautiful places to have a drink, what they lack in aesthetic appeal, they more than make up for in character. Stopping by 6th Street for a night of bar hopping might just be one of the best ways to truly get to know San Francisco.
Arrow Bar
10 Sixth St., San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.255.7920
Just look for the red, neon arrow pointing to the door, which leads into long, narrow strip of a bar. Illicit, dark and built to the look like a glittering cave; San Francisco's Arrow Bar is the ultimate after-party bar. Get there late for scenester watching and shots of Fernet.

Bar Anu
43 Sixth St., San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.543.3505
A small, swank stopping point for the world's best DJs, Bar Anu is worlds away from the impoverished 6th Street just outside. Velvet couches, fruit-infused vodka in jars, art and good-looking bartenders give Bar Anu the feel of an oasis, a watering hole for hip San Franciscans in the know.
