Portrero Hill Bars and Clubs

|
Composed mostly of artists and rockers, the Portrero Hill area is serene; yet still boasts some impressive nightlife. Most notable would be the punk rock venue Bottom of The Hill, which is gritty, smoky and an all around great time. Non-conformist hangouts like the Sublounge use airplane seats to accommodate customers and funky light fixtures for added effect. The proximity to the Bay Bridge and vintage, single-story residential hills make Portero Hill nightlife sometimes seem like more like parts of Oakland than San Francisco. Also, the area is a pricey cab ride if traveling from the inner city, but well worth it for the total change in scenery.
Bottom of the Hill
1233 17th St. (at Missouri), San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.621.4455
For fans of punk rock, ska and indie rock, the Bottom of the Hill is always worth the trip out to Portrero Hill. Rocker patrons pack the small dance floor, which is almost always as packed as the outdoor smoking patio just outside.

Cafe Cocomo
650 Indiana St. (at Mariposa), San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.824.6910
There is one word that comes to mind when visiting Cafe Cocomo: salsa. This venue features salsa dancing, salsa lessons and salsa musicians. They probably also serve chips and salsa to keep things extra caliente.

Il Pirata
2007 16th St. (at Utah), San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.626.2626
Il Pirata includes Italian and American menus, but also hosts a large dance floor and an open-air side patio for maximum. Dancing begins after 9pm, but the restaurant's bar area and dining facilities are open earlier for a different sort of entertainment.

Lingba Lounge
1498 18th St. (at Connecticut), San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.355.0001
Lingba (leeng-bah) is Thai for crazy monkey. With a lounge atmosphere spiced up by Southeast Asian accents, Lingba is a unique nightlife destination. DJs spin hypnotic grooves on a nightly basis and bartenders serve up exotic treats in a lush setting.

Thee Parkside
1600 17th St. (at Missouri), San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.503.0393
This quirky Potrero Hill bar caters to blue-collar locals and prose punks from the San Francisco Bay Guardian, whose offices are a quick block away. Not unexpectedly, weekday happy hours on Thee Parkside's back patio are more popular and populous than the toned-downed weekends.

Sublounge
628 20th St. (at 3rd), San Francisco CA; Tel. 415.552.3603
Sublounge does everything it can to avoid the "lounge" moniker, dumping the leather and velvet couches and uber-trendy attitude in exchange for airplane seats, Playstation 2 consoles and trippy light fixtures, creating a funky alternative to the beaten path.
