Some beloved acts that San Franciscans can be proud to call the city's own include: Sly & the Family Stone, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana and Vince Guaraldi (of
A Charlie Brown Christmas fame). "Sucka Free City" is also the home of Faith No More, bluesman Joe Louis Walker, '80s bands like Romeo Void and Journey ("Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely worrrrld..."), rap artists like Rappin' 4-Tay and the hip-hop DJ crews Invisibl Skratch Piklz (currently disbanded) and Triple Threat. The city boasts plenty of great unsigned talent as well. (Jimmy Aquino)

From the band's site: "A few years ago, three little toe-headed youngsters would drink beer together and sing harebrained songs: some original, some Neil Diamond, a few Hank Williams and Roger Miller tunes (but mostly Neil Diamond). They sure were adorable back then." |

Numero Tres
Emotional, melodic, dark and moody pop.
|
A crispy, crunchy San Francisco indie-rock trio that wraps the sweat-dripping riffage of post-punk powerpop around a creamy melodic center of "oooohyeah" harmonies, all glazed over with a thick swarm-of-angry-bees-in-your-face fuzz bass and tom-tom fury. |
2003 demo
Modern jazz and standards with a percussion and pop twist.
|
You Can't Keep it Down

|
She Mob
Cancel the Wedding
The female threesome (plus one lad) scribble smashingly raucous and surprisingly tender tunes in a decidedly I'm-getting-too-old-for-punk-but-I'm-still-kinda-pissed style reminscient of Scrawl and the Raincoats.
|
Dexterity
A hard-hitting New Orleans-style horn band, like a mix of Tower of Power, Santana, the Blues Brothers, and a pre-80s Kool and the Gang.

Todd Sickafoos Group
Dogs Outside
San Francisco jazz ensemble hailed for its adventurous and imaginative modern jazz.
|
Filipino-American indie band. From the band's site: "The Skyflakes are often lovingly described as 'cute and bubbly' or 'sweet and sugary.' But I know better. Just listen to their lyrics. Underneath the indie rock swirls and cuddly pop hooks are some mean words about putting bullets into yourself, dropping acid, talking $#!? about co-workers, and meatheads with body image problems..." |
