ROOT DIVISION PRESENTS: Second Saturday March 2011
Exploring the Environmental Implications of Art
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 12th, 7-10 pm
The practice of making and exhibiting art is often at odds with environmental ideals. In addition to the material and processes used to create individual artworks– a typical exhibition consumes a large amount of material and energy– including paint for prepping gallery walls, electricity for gallery lighting, and packing material for safely transporting work to and from the exhibition.
Although working within the framework of a standard exhibition, Manufactured Organic encourages conversation about the environmental impact of the art world. Through progressively shifting their art practices to reflect a sense of ecological awareness, the artists included in Manufactured Organic pose sustainable solutions to the environmental issues inherent in the exhibition process.
In an effort to offset the carbon footprint of this exhibition, a portion of the proceeds from Manufactured Organic will go toward the greening of Root Division.

ABOUT ROOT DIVISION:
Root Division is an arts & arts education non-profit located in the Mission District of San Francisco. Root Division's mission is to improve appreciation and access to the visual arts by connecting personal inspiration and community participation. We provide subsidized studio space to working artists in exchange for their service in creating shared learning opportunities for the community. Artists develop creatively and professionally by teaching art to under served youth, leading adult education classes, and producing exhibitions that showcase local emerging artwork. By combining multiple opportunities for creative exchange, Root Division cultivates an artistic ecosystem that enriches life throughout the Bay Area.
Root Division is supported in part by grants from Grants for the Arts: San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund & Voluntary Arts Contribution Fund, Walter & Elise Haas Fund, and Bill Graham Foundation. The Second Saturday Exhibition Series is sponsored by the San Francisco Arts Commission through a Cultural Equity Grant/Organizational Project Grant, and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
