Description
Born in Mexico City, Mónica de la Torre came to the United States in 1993 on a Fulbright scholarship to study at Columbia University. Her poetry explores with great depth both the boundaries and the permeability of imposed identity, combining a playful use of form and dry humor with a dint of hopefulness. Her debut poetry collection, Acúfenos, was published in Spanish by Taller Ditoria in 2006. Talk Shows, her first book in English, was published this year by Switchback Books. In addition to her work as a poet, she was the co-editor of the anthology Reversible Monuments: Contemporary Mexican Poetry (published in 2002 by Copper Canyon P), and translator and editor of the bilingual volume Poems by Gerardo Deniz (published in 2001 by Taller Ditoria/ Lost Roads). Currently, De la Torre serves as poetry editor of The Brooklyn Rail.
