Located among the high-end boutiques off Union Square, long time San Francisco mainstay (since 1952) Britex sells every imaginable fabric you could dream of, from Asian-print silks to Madras-plaid upholstery fabric to linen, lace, fake fur, vinyl, Chanel-inspired woolens and absolutely everything in between. It is simply the best fabric store, period.

The first two floors are filled to the ceiling with silks, woolens, cottons, fancy dress goods, and home decorating fabrics – at prices still way beyond my range. This was a little disconcerting, since I had naively thought that fabric on its own (i.e., not prepackaged as an outfit) would be cheap. I didn't completely discard the fantasy and found it partially fulfilled once reaching the third floor, an entire room full of remnants and other leftovers.
